Tajikistan is a mountainous country in Central Asia bordered by Afghanistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Much of the country is covered by the Pamir and Alay mountain ranges, making it one of the most mountainous nations in the world.

The country is divided into five first-level administrative units. These include the provinces of Sughd and Khatlon, the autonomous region of Gorno-Badakhshan, the capital city of Dushanbe, and the Districts of Republican Subordination, a group of districts administered directly by the national government.

Gorno-Badakhshan covers nearly half of Tajikistan's land area but contains only a small share of the population. The region includes some of the highest mountains in Central Asia and is crossed by the famous Pamir Highway. In contrast, most of the country's population lives in the western valleys and lowlands.

This quiz helps you learn the names and locations of all first-level administrative divisions of Tajikistan.
