Serbian is the official language of Serbia and one of the official languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo. It belongs to the South Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family and is spoken by around 9 million people, primarily in the Balkans.

Serbian has two main dialect groups: Shtokavian, which forms the basis of the standard language, and Torlakian, spoken in the southeastern regions. Uniquely, Serbian is written in both the Cyrillic and Latin scripts, with both used officially and interchangeably. The standardization of Serbian developed alongside the broader Serbo-Croatian language reforms in the 19th century. With its rich grammatical structure and shared history with neighboring languages, Serbian is central to the cultural and literary identity of the Serbian people, especially through epic poetry, folklore, and contemporary literature.
